OCTIO Environmental is a start-up company owned by the employees of OCTIO AS. The aim of the company is to make technologies developed for hydrocarbon production available to environmental applications. For this, the company has the right to apply all technology and intellectual property developed within OCTIO and its daughter company, Gravitude, at markets outside the oil and gas industry. Currently, OCTIO Environmental has three employees and we plan to continue growing to become a world leading company within advanced environmental monitoring.

OCTIO Environmental provides flexible multi-physical monitoring services, optimally tailored to every specific project. Our services are complete, covering all the steps required to convert physical data into value for our clients. This includes feasibility studies defining overall monitoring needs, planning and execution of data acquisition, and providing support to integrate the acquired data into the client’s workflows.

Our main technologies are real-time seismic monitoring onshore and offshore, high accuracy 4D gravity monitoring, and seafloor deformation monitoring:

  • Our system for seismic monitoring is scalable and flexible and allows for the integration of third-party sensors. Applications range from focused systems for passive seismic monitoring of caprock integrity during drilling, to full field-scale monitoring systems using active seismic sources.
  • Our patented technology for station based 4D gravity monitoring provides a direct measure of density changes in the subsurface with order of magnitude higher resolution than current airborne or shipborne technologies.
  • Seafloor deformation monitoring enables mapping the compaction or uplift of the subsurface offshore with comparable accuracies to that provided by GPS systems onshore. Hence, our technology provides a tool for enhanced safety in regions that are actively deforming either due to tectonic plate movements or human induced changes of the subsurface (e.g. mining or hydrocarbon extrapolation).

With our suit of technologies, we can offer a range of services within several market applications.

CO2 storage:
Our technology for cost effective and high accuracy subsea measurements of gravity and seafloor deformation has been applied to monitor CCS projects with remarkable success. Gravity and seafloor deformation data is used to understand reservoir compartmentalization as well as dissolution of CO2 into formation brine.  Moreover, seafloor deformation can be used to indicate fault reactivation (such as at In Salah) or the presence of sealing faults.

Our system for seismic monitoring is qualified for a 25 years lifetime and well tested at the NCS. It provides microseismic monitoring to ensure caprock integrity, active seismic for imaging the plume extension, and it can be coupled to any third-party sensor for environmental monitoring of the water column. In combination with Guardian we deliver real-time analysis of the data enabling timely implementation of mitigating actions in the case of unforeseen events.

Undersea mining:
The 5% of the ocean floor currently being mapped has revealed mineral deposits valued to over $1 trillion. Compared to airborne or shipborne gravity, gravity observations at the seafloor has order of magnitude higher accuracy and is conducted closer to the source allowing for more detailed mapping of the geological formation. For the highest precision gravity during mining exploration, our technology for seafloor gravity measurements enables the operators to achieve maps of deposits down to 4000 meter depths.

Earthquake and tsunami risk mitigation:
The largest earthquakes on Earth occur in subduction zones, the most recent examples being 2011 Japan (Mw9.0) and 2012 Chile (Mw8.8). Large plate deformations occur both before, during and after such events, and utilizing our technologies for seafloor deformation and time-lapse gravity monitoring for seafloor surveillance can provide valuable information for better understanding the tectonic processes and improve earthquake and tsunami risk mitigation.

OCTIO Environmental is currently cooperating with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) in a project (ASUMO) to perform the first Pilot using our technology to monitor the Nankai Trough subduction zone off the coast of Japan.

Geothermal energy:
The capacity and demand for geothermal energy are growing globally, partially fueled by new developments in drilling deep geothermal wells. OCTIO Environmental can provide a unique service for real time detection of fracturing and mapping of the subsurface during drilling. The technology is based on passive seismic monitoring, and data processing is conducted in real-time using dedicated in-house processing software named Guardian. In result, our technology is a unique solution for accurately locating fractures and potential integrity issues around the well path in real-time enabling the introduction of mitigating actions before severe situations occur. Another important innovation is the ability to position the drill-bit relative to the seismic maps of the drilling target, that is, with respect to the governing knowledge of the rock properties in the subsurface.

Within academia, high accuracy 4D gravity has been used for monitoring geothermal reservoirs for several years. OCTIO Environmental can offer professional services for station based 4D gravity for monitoring geothermal projects onshore and offshore.

Directional drilling on land:
New technological developments for directional drilling on land has enabled high precision drilling through rock formations exceeding three kilometers. This has opened new markets, especially within hydropower extraction but also in enabling environmental friendly and cost-efficient solutions for new infrastructure developments. For these applications, our solution for seismic monitoring during drilling can provide valuable knowledge on the formation properties, the integrity of the host rock and the positioning of the drill bit in real time.

Regional subsidence monitoring:
Regional subsidence represents a major challenge in several densely populated coastline areas, exemplified by the Adriatic Sea outside northern Italy.  The rising water levels relative to the subsiding shoreline call for expensive mitigating actions. OCTIO Environmental provides a solution for mapping the regional subsidence pattern within cm accuracies utilizing our technology for high accuracy seafloor deformation monitoring.
